Look Good ...
Feel Better, a national program that helps cancer patients
cope with the appearance changes caused by cancer treatment, has
awarded Violet Deilke its highest honor for her volunteer
service.
Violet was presented with the National Service Award in January
2010 at the Long Beach, Calif., International Salon and Spa
Expo. She received North Dakota's state award from the North
Dakota chapter of the American Cancer Society in October 2009.
Look
Good ... Feel Better is a collaboration of the Personal Care
Products Council and the American Cancer Society. It brings
cancer patients together with volunteer cosmetologists,
estheticians, makeup artists and nail technicians for practical
tips about skin care and makeup techniques. The cancer patients
receive guidance for coping with hair loss in free nonmedical,
brand-neutral workshops.
"When someone likes how she looks, she feels better," Violet
says, explaining why she believes in the program and its
mission. "She is more confident, carries herself better and
ultimately responds better to treatment ... in other words,
'looks good and feels better.'
"It frees her to feel more hope for her future."
Violet, who owns Centre for Hair and Wellness in Moorhead,
Minn., has volunteered with the 20-year-old program for 19
years.
