Diana’s Friendship Tips
The following list was made by a friend of mine who has been
dealing with breast cancer. When I found out that another
friend of mine, Mary, had breast cancer, I asked Diana for a
list of ideas for things that I could do that would truly be
helpful and/or supportive. I hope you can use some of them
and share them with others. —

-
Go with her to
treatment. Maybe rent a movie to watch with her.
-
Try on wigs with her. Tell her what you really
think.
-
Watch for cute hats -- they're hard to find that
cover and fit well. Scarves, too (but not slippery
fabrics).
-
Take her some meals over the
first
2 or 3 days after treatment.
-
Take her kids out.
-
Offer to grocery shop -- it is so hard when you are
nauseated.
-
If she looks good, tell her. It really helps.
-
E-mail a joke a day.
-
Ask specific questions, not just “how are you?”
-
Cry if you feel like it; it shows you really care.
It’s okay to tell her if you’re worried, too.
-
Put her on a prayer chain
-
Keep her in your prayers.
-
Offer to make beds or change bedding.
-
Plant some flowers for her.
-
Anything that would make you feel good would work
for her too.
-
If she needs to get a breast prosthesis, go with
her. They have special swimsuits, too.
-
Organize window washing.
-
If she doesn’t have a journal, give her one. It
helps to put some things and thoughts in writing.
-
Make sure her husband has someone to talk to.
-
Arrange for some cleaning help for a day.
-
Find a drop-off laundry.
-
Hug her every time you see her.
